That is a type of gearbox that uses a flexible metal cup.  And a rigid circular spline to transfer torque. The gearbox consists of three main components. A circular spline, a flexible metal cup called a “wave generator,” .  And a set of elliptical or circular shaped gears called “flexspline.”

As the input shaft rotates, it drives the wave generator. Causing it to deform and create a series of waves. That propagate around the circumference of the cup. The waves in the wave generator engage the teeth of the flexspline. Causing it to rotate around the central axis of the gearbox. The flexspline in turn meshes with an outer ring gear to transmit power to the output shaft.
